Amongst many reports on imaging devices, amorphous selenium is one of the most promising candidates of a photoconducting material for future imaging devices since it exhibits ultra high photosensitivity by using avalanche multiplication within the solid. However, conventional electron emitters requires high vacuum, which restricts the device lifetime. Diamond, with its outstanding properties such as negative electron affinity and high chemical stability, can alter these problems with its low extraction field and low vacuum. This report presents successful operation of diode- and triode-structure amorphous selenium photodetectors using a diamond cold cathode.
