Fbdrin is a dinmer protein which shares many characterstics with erythrocyie spectrin. It is assumed to strengthen the membrane structure by forming an extensive peripheral membrane protein network; at the same time, fodrin is able to interact with various cytoskeletal components and thus modulate the overall cell structure . By immunofluorescence microscopy, fodrin was observed along the cell surface in various cells and tissues (1-3). However, the localization of fodrin at the ultra-structural level has hardly been studied. In the first half of this paper, we examined the renal uriniferous and collecting tubules by immunoelectron microscopy. In the second half, we studied how fodrin behaves when the cell membrane undergoes a drastic change: the localization of fodrin during and after massive secretion was followed in the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla.
