A new convenient colorimetric method was developed for the direct analysis of thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA:L) in the complexes containing rare earth metals(M), TTA and 4-methylpyridine(P), and applied to the analysis of the newly prepared complexcs (M=La,Eu,Gd,Y and Yb). Because of the complicated composition, mutual disturbances were inevitable in the elemental analysis of these complexes by the usual way. Ten ml each of the standard solution of TTA {(0.40)mg in xylene} was taken, and 10ml of aqueous solution of Co(II) (0.05M), 2ml of acetate buffer (1 M; pH5.6) and 1ml of 4-methylpyridine solution (1g/50ml) were added. After the mixture was vigorously shaken for 2min, the absorbance of the organic phase was measured at 430nm. TTA concentradtin vs. absorbance became linear. Weighed sample {(15〜20)mg} of each complex was dissolved in 50ml of xylene and shaken with 50ml of 6 N hydrochloric acid for 10min. Ten ml of the organic phase was treated in the same way as the standard solution and the absorbance was measured. It was shown that the number of TTA molecules in the new complexes was all 4 and that the composition of them was ML_4P (Table 2). A similar crystal structure was indicated for the examined complexes except LaL_4P by the X-ray powder diffractmetry.
