Antifungal and antibacterial activities of some synthetic drugs were compared employing about 50 species of microbes.In general, the effectiveness assayed by serial dilution method was as follows (listed in decreasing order of their activities) : Oxine, sodium pentachlorophenate (NaPCP), vitamin K_3,butyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (BpHB), dehydroacetic acid (DHA).The higher the pH of a medium was, the more effective became the action of oxine, while the activities of NaPCP, BpHB and DHA were enhanced by the lowering of pH.Parallelity was scarcely observed between inhibiting activities of these drugs against the germination of mold spores and those against the growth of preformed mycelia. For the growth of mycelial mat, NaPCP was most effective and oxine less active than K_3.Preservative values of these drugs were compared in the cases of soy, glucose-syrup (used as an enema) and fish paste.In the case of fish paste, DHA added alone was not effective, but in conjunction with nitrofurazone, it was proved to be very effective in preventing growth of molds as well as bacteria.
