Antivacterial action of three furan-derivatives, 5-nitro-2-furfural semicarbazone (F), 5-nitro-furylacryl amide (Z) and 5-nitoro-2-furyacrolein semicarbazone (P), has been dealt with.Some of the basic factors nesessary for the application of these drugs to industrial fermentation and foodstuffs have already been reported by TERUI, SHIBASAKI et al.(Production and Technique, 2,33;8,32;9,22,1950).In most of our experiments, B.subtilis was employed.In general, these drugs exert relatively low activity in bactericidal action in spite of their high potency of bacteriostatic action(cf.Table 1,page 160,Fig.1,page 161), and the greather the initial number of cells (N) per ml is, the weaker becomes the bactericidal action.Fig.2(page 163) shows the linear relationship between log N and the degree of inhibition (H_A) of F in lag phase.Temerature coefficient (Q_<10>) of disinfection constant (k) is 1.2〜1.9 in cases of F and Z(cf.Table 2,page 162).All these drugs exert neither germicidal action against subtilis-spores nor accelerating action on the thermal death rate of the spores.The effectiveness of the drugs added to the culture of B.subtilis is dependent greatly on the phase of growth, i.e.the more the culture is aged, the weaker is the action(cf.Fig.4;5,page 164).The relation between drug concentration (G) and H_A is illustrated in Fig.3(page 163), indicating that TAMIYA's formula is Valid with regard to Z.Only Z is effective in bacteriolytic action when added at the later stage of logarithmic phase.Concentration effect of these drugs seems to be very low as the exponent m in the formula, k=AG^m, in which A is a constant, is very small(0.1〜0.4) as shown in Table 3(page 162).Electrophtometric method for the measurement of bactericidal action is inadequate in the case of E.coli, owing presumably to the very low activity of lytic enzyme system in the test organism(cf.Fig.6,page 165).Observation on the effect of F added in two steps(first, at the time of inoculation and second, in logarithmic phase : cf.Fig.7,page 165) in connection with the above results, leads us to the assumption that the redcutive inactivation of F cannot be the only cause of lowered activity of the drug when applied to the culture of large population of vacteria, but the gradual change in drug sensitivity of cells in the progress of growth pahse and selsctive growth of resistant mutant should also be taken into consideration.
