In order to determine the mode of cellulose degradation by the thermophilic bacteria, research has been undertaken on the chemical and physical changes of the cellulose in the fermentation. The results are summarized as follows : 1) By the thermphilic bacteria, the degradation of cellulose does not proceed simultaneously throughout the cellulose; in the initial steps, it is broken down in the amorphous portion or on the surface of the micell.The splitting of cellulose molecules seems to proceed with some anhydroglucose unit from the ends.2) The only chemical change is the hydrolysis of 1,4-glycosidic linkages and is not accompanied with the oxidative cleavage or with the rupture by the cellulase of weathering type.3) In the fermentation, the origin and the treatment of cellulose have no effect on the hydrolysis, and after a considerable extent of the reaction the ratio of the crystalline and the amorphous portions of the cellulose and the degree of α- cellulose are demonstrated to be almost constant.4) Presumably, two or more polyases still exist in the cellulase.5) The strain used in the experiment seems to be of a high purity and has a constant activity.
