1.Products of thermophilic cellulose fermentation were quantitatively determined.acetic acid(55 % of vonsumed cellulose)carbon dioxide(30 % consumed cellulose)ethanol(22 % consumed cellulose) lactic acid, formic acid and acetaldehyde(a small quantity)reducing sugar(trace)In this fermentation the production of non-volatile acid and ethanol had reached its maximum when most of cellulose was consumed, but the volatile acid continued to increase thereafer. This increase would have been derived from ethanol and non-volatile acids by chemical change.2. With regard to the effects of CaCo_3 on this fermentation, we have found an important fact that while its presence does not affect the cellulose digestion the production of ethanol and acids is greatly acceleratd theredy.3. Generally, the optimum concentration of cellulose in the medium for this fermentation was 1.5〜2.0%, but we obtained the maximum yield of ethanol and acids with 4〜5 % cellulose.4. Notwithstanding it is generally recognized that a medium containing 1〜2% of cellulose is the most favourable for this fermentation, and that more amount of cellulose over 2% is not available, we have now succeeded by our process of "exchanging or flowing liquid" in digesting cellulose in much higher concentrations so that the permanent fermentation process has been completed.
