Studying the useful mold for retting process of ramie-fibre, we had a good result about Aspergillus niger var., which had been isolated from air and pure-cultured in our laboratory.We studied pectin-decomposing properties and culture methods of this strain. Submerged culture method was better than surface culture method for retting process, but strong pectinase actions were observed in both culture methods.Inorganic nitrogen source such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate seemed useful and pH 3.0 and 30℃ were favorable condition for pectin decomposition.
