Researchs were undertaken on the thermophile fermentation for the purpose of the utilization of wood sawdust, rice straw and other waste cellulosic materials.1) Natural cellulosic materials.The results were similar to those obtained in previous works. The percentages of the fermentation of pure or approximately pure cellulosic materials were above 80%, but the fermentability of field-retted hemp and ramie was 54.50% and 25.95% respectively. This reduction of fermentability may have been due to the high degree of orientation of micells. In general, the other natural materials-e.g., wood sawdust, barley etc.- showed very low degrees of fermentability.2) Treated celluloses.The average percentage of the fermentation of "Bemberg" and "Viscose" yarns was 85.26%, while neither acetylcellulose ("Cellestron") nor cellophane gave any indication of fermentation over a 14-day incubation period.3) Wood pulps and straw pulps.The pulps showed some differences in fermentability due to the chemical treatments or to the sources used in the preparations. The rice straw pulp treated with soda proved to be the most fermentable (92%).4) Effect of chemical treatment of fermentability of natural cellulosic materials.In order to obtain a good fermentable material, treatments with hot-water, benzene-alcohol solution, dilute acids, dilute alkalies and delignifying reagents were made on natural cellulosic materials. It has been shown that wood and straw treated with a simple chemical method can be readily attacked by the thermophile bacteria to produce useful products.
