In an attempt to find out cultural conditions favorable for cellulose decomposition by Trichoderma koningi, which gradually changes absorbent cotton to minute shreds and lessens its weight, several experiments were carried out (Tables 1〜7).Submerged cluture in Czapek's medium (nitrogen source ammonium sulfate) adjusted to pH 4.3〜6.0 and kept at 25〜30℃, answerd our purpose best, the optima lying at pH 6.0 and 25℃ respectively.Of all nitrogen sources tested, an ammonium salt, especially the sulfate, was found effective when added in a 0.5〜1.0% concentration; an organic one, however, was utterly useless.Not so remarkable as it was, addition of potassium dihydrogen phosphate to the culture medium was at its best around 0.3%.As given in Table 2,the larger surface area, the higher decomposition ratio. The rate of decomposition amounts to about 40% in 30 days.Cellulose shreds were about 150〜1500μ, generally 400〜900μin length, but no change in width.
