In 1953 Professor Maekawa postulated a theory from extensive clinical and experimental researches on hypertension that the true cause of essential hypertension might be disturbances of the ATP-ATPase system of cardiovascular system, especially release of Na-activated ATPase from the kidney into blood stream. In accordance with this Maekawa's theory on hypertension, the author extracted a crude ATPase (fraction W) from rat's kidney with Weber-Edsall's solution, and then obtained semipurified ATPases (fraction C and K) and fraction S by means of the adsorbtion method with Alumina Cream C_γ. The author investigated the effects of these fractions on blood pressure by Hamilton's manometer, when they were injected intravenously to anesthetized rats. The results are as follows : (1) Fraction W had pressor effects of 19-35 mm. Hg in systolic pressure and 4-31 mm. Hg in diastolic pressure, lasting for 2'40"-5'40" after an initial phase of depresson.(2) Fraction C had pressor effects of 16-55 mm. Hg systolic pressure and 10-30 mm. Hg in diastolic pressure, lasting for 3'-10' immediately after injection or after a phase of depression.(3) Fraction K showed pressor effects of 10-14 mm. Hg in systolic pressure and 3-12 mm. Hg in diastolic pressure, lasting for 2'20"-3' after a short latent or slight depression phase.(4) On the contrary fraction S showed depressor effects of 21-26 mm. Hg in systolic pressure and 9-18 mm. Hg in diastolic prerrure, lasting for 1'40-2'10" immediately after injection.(5) Pressor ATPases (fraction W, C and K) showed no tachyphylaxis by repeated administrations.
