Prolongation and enhancement of light-dependent hydrogen evolution by nitrogen-limited culture of a cyanobacterium, Anabaena sp. N-7363,were attempted under the conditions of semi-batch renewal of gas mixture in a closed system. Nitrogen-limitation to 1% nitrogen gas in argon gave the maximal hydrogen evolving, rate, 6.4 μl/h・mg cells, although a higher concentration of nitrogen gas gave better sustainability. Aerobic hydrogen evolution concomitant with the growth was also possibel at the rate of about 1 μl/h・mg cells.
