Operation conditions of a denitrification process of rotating discs with racycle were studied to achieve effectively the removal of nitrogen from a synthetic wastewater composed principally of nitrite and/or ammonia and glucose.A critical concentration ratio of COD/NO_2-N in the nifluent was around 3.8 to realize about 100% denitrification, below the concentration ratio the denitrification having been deteriorated. It was desirable for the denitrification that DO (dissolved oxygen) was absent in the wastewater in the anoxic reactor. DO level was affected considerably by a hydraulic loading in te denitrification process. It was revealed from this experimental work that an effective denitrification was made possible only when the recycle ratio of 4 and a nominal overall residence time longer than 0.4 days were reckoned. The redox potential of the wastewater in the denitrification reactor was an index to estimate the concentration of the nitrified nitrogen.
