Studies on the formation of a purplish-red pigment by streptomycete no. 7561,which was isolated from, a soil sample, revealed that the original isolate was contaminated with a bacterium, and that the pigment was formed by the cooperative action of the two organisms.Streptomyces propurpuratus and the contaminant bacterium were separated in pure culture from the original isolate. The bacterium was ascribable to the genus Bacillus and designated as Bacillus sp. no. 751. Neither strain produced the pigment independently.Pigment formation by S. propurpuratus was found not to be specific to Bacillus sp.no. 751 as partners strain, but to occur with other microorganisms in both solid and submerged cultures.
