Cells of Bacillus subtilis mounted on a hydrophobic filter membrane were dried under various vapor pressures. Sedimentation profiles by alkaline sucrose density gradient centrifugation showed that single-strand breakage of deoxyribonucleic acid occurred at or below a water activity of 0.53,but no breakages occurred at or above 0.75.
