In an investigation of the role of photosynthetic bacteria in the treatment of high BOD effluents, pure culture studies on Rhodopseudomonas capsulata in batch and continuous culture have been carried out. Nutritional studies revealed the importance of supplementing the defined media with vitamins, trace elements and certain amino acids (notably glutamic acid and histidine). The effects of illumination intensity (40 f.c. to 550 f.c.), dissolved oxygen tension (DOT=0.5-50% air saturation) and dilution rate (D=0.025-0.27 hr<-1>) were determined in continuous culture on acetate media. It was established that light-energy limitation could occur at higher dilution rates and that low DOT conditions resulted in increased COD reduciton together with higher biomass production. The pure culture study represents the first stage of a more complete analysis of photosynthetic bacterial activity in mixed cultures and in industrial/agricultural effluents.
