Quantitative analysis of crude drugs by high-performance liquid chromatography for the introduction to the Japanese Pharmacopoeia(Material study)

It was after the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP) was revised to the XII edition that HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) came to be used for the quality evaluation of crude drugs in Japan. At first, HPLC of crude drugs began with 8 crude drugs including their relative articles (powders, extracts, etc.). There was a reason why Japan was a leading country in the field of crude drug analysis. Japan had a special need in that crude drugs and their preparations (Kampo medicines) were used in hospitals by the national health insurance system and scientific evaluation was strongly demanded by doctors and the government. The component dose is important for the support of EBM (evidence based medicine). Recently, the number of the component evaluations in JP has increased. I have proposed some HPLC of crude drugs as well as standardization of Reference Standards to JP as a member of the committee since JP XII. In this paper, the introductions of HPLC of crude drugs to JP are briefly summarized.
