239 Thermal Shock Behavior in SiC-coated Carbon-Carbon Composites

Thermal shock behavior of SiC-coated carbon-carbon (C/C) composites were experimentally examined. Water quench tests were carried out with various temperature differences (ΔT) up to 1000K. Results showed that catastrophic failure, usually observed in monolithic ceramics did not occur in the SiC-coated C/C composites even at ΔT of 1000K, but fracture of the SiC coating and debonding betwee the SiC coating and the C/C composite was observed. Thermal stress analyses were carried to examine the fracture modes.
