A105 Turbulent Thermal Efficiency Enhancement on Nuclear Reactor Cooling System by Large Scale Vortex Generation(Nuclear power-1/combustion)

Experimental and computational studies were performed to confirm the turbulent thermal efficiency enhancement of nuclear reactor cooling system by large scale vortex generation. The large scale vortex motions were generated by rearranging the inclination angles of mixing vanes to the coordinate directions. Axial development of mean and turbulent velocities in the subchannels were measured by the 2-color LDV system. Eddy diffusivity heat flux model and k-ε model were employed to analyze the turbulent heat and fluid flow in the subchannel. The turbulence generated by the split mixing vanes has small length scales so that maintain only about 10 D_H after the spacer grid. On the other hand, the turbulences generated by the large scale vortex continue more and remain up to 25D_H after the spacer gird. Computational results for the heat transfer between rod bundles and coolant flows show that the 20% increase of Nusselt number can be attained by the large scale vortex generation.
