Hobbing torque is one of the important factors influencing the vibration of a hobbing machine and the accuracy of hobbed gears. In this paper, simple orthogonal turning tests are performed for the purpose of obtaining easily the specific cutting force that is necessary to calculate the hobbing torques from the results of the first report. The specific cutting force in orthogonal turning needs to be compensated, when it is applied to the calculation of hobbing torques. Therefore, compensating coefficients are investigated in the cases of hobbing different heat treated materials under various hobbing conditions. It is discussed, moreover, on the causes of a difference in specific cutting forces between hobbing and orthogonal turning.
