Effects of Ca^<++> Ion on the Formation of Free Radicals in lrradiated Deoxyribonucleoprotein

ESR studies of dry deoxyribonucleoprotein in the presence or absence of Ca^<++> ion revealed that the addition of Ca^<++> ions to deoxyribonucleoprotein resulted in a decrease of electrons transferred from protein moiety to DNA moiety. It has been shown that Ca^<++> ion added to the deoxyribonucleoprotein (DNP) prior to irradiation inhibits the re-association of DNA and protein. This fact could be explained by a complex formation between Ca^<++> ion and two neighboring phosphates of DNA, which were exposed upon ionizing radiation which weakened the bond between DNA and protein. On the other hand, Kuwabara et al. found that ESR signal obtained from dry calf thymus DNP irradiated with γ-rays was similar to that obtained from DNA, suggesting that free radicals produced in DNP were preferentially located on DNA molecules.
