Fluorescence spectra have been measured in Ca(PG..). : Eu" at 77 K under dye laserexcitation at various energies within the absorption lines due to the transitions 'F.,'F, -'D., 'D.. It has been found that the 'D. -'F. transition probability and the meanenergy of the three 'D. -'F, lines are linearly correlated with the energy of the'D. -'F. line, and also that this energy is quadratically correlated with the transitionenergy between 'D. and the lowest level of 'F,. These results are interpreted in termsthat the spreads of these energies and the transition probability are due to the site-to-site variation in the second-order crystal-field parameter. Further, the forbidden'D. -'F. transition is concluded to be allowed by the borrowing of the intensity fromthe 'D. -'F. (7V#.,=0) line through the ./-mixing. Using polarization characteristics offluorescence, whether the lines are due to the electric or magnetic dipole transition isdetermined and the Stark levels of the 'F. and 'D, manifolds are assigned. It is alsoshown that the point symmetry of the Eu" site is C., or C..[europium, glass, fluorescence line-narrowing, transition probability, site sym- ll metrylll
