Charge Dipolar Orderings and Magnetoelastics in Rare Earth Hexaborides

1VIagnetoeIastic effects rneasured previotmsly on Ce.La) .B(; were reanalyzed based on the dynanaical Jahn-Teller effect as a single site effect and the paired distortion as an interaction effectdeveloped in recent papers for RB(; in generarl. In the dilute systenas, we observe an anomalotrsCtrrie-Weiss tertaa catrsed f'rorn coraapetition between the single site effect and the pair effect,while in the dense systeraas anomalies dtme to pair fornaaation are observed even in the paramag-netic region. Strong frtmstration inherent to the pair ordering plays an important role. Anoraaalousproperties in PrB5 and NdB5 xvere also interpreted based on the above COITIIIIOII tnodel in goodagreement with the experitnental restrlts, in particttlar with anomalous netrtron scattering mea-sureraaent. Magnetoelastic elects were rneastrred also on PIB6 and NdB(5. In PIB6 the effectis 100 tirne stronger than that in CeB(3 due to induced tnixing through distortions between thenearly degenerated ground levels, f) and T5. The chsrrge dipolar ordering was also observedclearly at the lower ordering teznperatttre 'Z'2, f'orcing an inconarnensurate m?xgnetic ordering tocomumenstrrate.
