Infrared absorption spectra of S.(0), 2,(o) -F- ,s'.(o) and S,(0) -l- S.(0) (v = l, 2, - ?) insolid parahydrogen are calculated on the basis of the induction mechanism of dipolemoment. Effects of the propagation of rotational excitation on the spectral shapethrough the electric quadrupole-quadrupole interaction are studied in detail, in agree-ment with the recent experiments. The difference of the excitation energy in the solidphase from that in a free molecule, which increases systematically for higher over-tones, is discussed. The dispersion and overlap interactions can be shown to causesuch difference.
