A mechanism of crystal distortion under high pressure is discttssed in solid normalhydrogen. The strong interaction between the lattice vibratior? and the degeneraterotational states on orthohydrogens is treated in a form simil;tr to the cooperativeJahn-Teller effect. The crystal field due to the local distortion can be very large underhigh pressure, leading to continuous decrease of thcc axial ratio, c/ a, from its idealvalue of the hcp structure with increasing pressure at room temperature, in agreementwith the recent experiments. Isotope effects are also discussed. '1-he first order transi-lion of the distortion is predicted as a function of temperature
