Observation of Transient Nutation Effect in Microwave Transitions of Ammonia Molecule

Transient nutations in the J=K, J=K+1, and J=K+2 inversion transitions of ammonia are observed by applying repetitive pulse voltage to the repellor of a klystron. The reciprocal of the damping time constant T_2 increases linearly with the pressure in the range of 6 mTorr to 50 mTorr, and depends on J and K in the same manner as the linewidth. The magnitude of 1/2πT_2 for each transition is found to be systematically smaller than the corresponding linewidth measured by Legan et al. The linewidths are remeasured on the J=3, K=3 and J=3, K=2 transitions, and a reasonable agreement with 1/2πT_2 is obtained.
