Highly Sensitive Laser Spectroscopic Method for Measurement of Collisional Relaxation Parameters of Molecules

An intracavity time-resolved spectroscopic method has been developed for studies of collisional relaxation mechanisms associated with very weak infrared transitions. The Stark pulse applied on absorptive molecules modulates the loss in the laser cavity. Transient behaviors of the laser output provide information on the molecular relaxation. The experiment is carried out on frequency coincidences between the ν_7 ^rR(6, 6) transition of CH_3CN and the 9 μm R(22) CO_2 laser line and between the ν_6 ^rR(10, 8) transition of CH_3Cl and the 10 μm R(20) CO_2 laser line. The relaxation rate constant is determined.
