The high-spin states of "'Gd were investigated by means of' multiple Coulomb excitation90with a 390-1VIeV Zr beam. The naezaabers of the ground-state rotation?tl band of "'Gd wereassigned up to (3172 ). The members of a positive-parity side band were also strongly excitedup to high spins (33/2") with poptulations comparable to those of' ground-band xnembers. Theexperimental population is coztapared with Cotrlounb-excitation ca[ctrlations taking account of therecommended upper limits for El and E3 strengths cornpiled in the whole naass region. It turnsout that an El and/or an E3 strength larger than those limits would be necessary to accountfor the experiment.
