A traffic jam indtrced by slowing down is investigated using the optimal velocity model of thecar following rnodels. When cars are decelerated in the presence of hindrances, two kinds of'traffic jam occur behind the hindrance: one is an oscillating jam and the other is a homogeneotrsjarn. When the slowing down is srnall, the oscillating jaun occurs. If'the slowing down is large, the.jana is hornogeneotrs over space and tirne. The linear stability theory is applied to the traffic .jatn,The critical line and critical mode of the instability are fotrnd. It is shown that the boundarybetween the oscillating and homogeneotrs .jatns is consistent with the critical line of the linearstability. The periods of the oscillating janu are a].cout two tiutaes and four times the critical naodeestimated by the linear stability theory.
