Nonlocal Unitary Transformation and String Order in S=1/2 Heisenberg Chain with Bond Alternation

We investigate the ground-state properties of an S = l /2 l-Ieisenberg chain withbond alternation, which reduces to the .5: 1 antiferromagnetic (AF) chain in a strongcoupling limit, using a nonlocal unitary transformation. It is shown that the transfor-mation works well, as in the case of S= l AF models, and hence it transforms themodel into a ferromagnetic model with a Z. X Z. symmetry. The phase diagram iscalculated in the transformed system with string order parameters by a molecular fieldapproximation, and the result is shown to agree essentially with the numerical resultobtained by Hida. We also argue the difference between Hida's string orderparameter and one corresponding to the ,5: l string order parameter of den Nijs andRommelse.
