A study is rrxade of tlae stretching ancl distortion of material line elercteztts in fur-bulence both analytically and numerically. Approximations for the statistics of theseprocesses derived by perturbative expansions are tested by comparison witltdynamical sixnulations in two dimensions. An integral time scale associated with theI,agraztgian statistics of the velocity gradients plays a key role in tl?e approximations.A rough estimation of the time scale is ob[aiuaed by a dynamical short-timc: analysis bynnaking use of the Navier-Stokes equation.material line elements, stretching, curvature, dynamical sltort time azralysis
