Nonlinear interactions in geostrophic, beta-plane turbulence induce frequency shifts in Rossby wave propagation. A statistical closure theory shows that the shifts are of systematic sign and can be quite large compared with the bare Rossby frequency. This is also supported by direct numerical simulations. Under certain conditions, the closure equations yield a simple approximation for the shifts. A physical interpretation of the shifts is given by a model that includes oscillating random sweeping and strain of large eddies.
