Lattice Expansion of Ultrafine Cr Particles

The temperature dependence ol' the lattice constant and the difl'raction untensuty pro-files of ul(rafine bcc Cr particles witlt 750 A in the average diameter were investigatedby X-ray difl'raction and least-squares pattern fitting methods in a wide temperatturerange from 88 K to 375 K. Coefficient of a thermal expansion differed by about 30'%cat T >T. and 10'%c at l 70 K< T< T. respectively l'rom the bulk data. New extra peakwas observed below about 210 K at the low angle side of the observed 1 10, 21 l and310 reflection positions for the bcc Cr structure. The t'eature in the ex)cerimentalresults was discussed on the basis of a lattice expansion which was closely related toan enhancentent ol' rite magnittmde ol' the magnetic xnoments relative to the I112l1X1I11L1I1lvalue of the spin density wave ixt bulk Cr.
