L1_1-Type Ordered Phase in Cu-Pt-Pd Ternary Alloys

The composition and temperature range of an L1_1-type superlattice formation in ternary alloy systems CuPt_<1-y> Pd_y, PtCu_<1-y>Pd_y and (CuPt)_<1-y>Pd_y has been studied by X-ray diffractometry and differential thermal analysis. The L1_1-type ordered structure with a rhombohedral symmetry was observed over a composition range of 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.4, 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.5 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.29 in the CuPt_<1-y>Pd_y PtCu_<1-y>Pd_y and (CuPt)_<1-y>Pd_y, respectively. The ordered structure with a negligible rhombohedral distortion was observed in the range PtCu_<1-y>Pd_y(0.3≤y≤0.5) and (CuPt)_<1-y>Pd_y(0.25≤y≤0.29). The transition temperature from the L1_1-phase to a disordered Al-phase has a maximum value of 1080 K at the common terminal alloy CuPt and decreases nearly monotonically with increasing Pd content for all the alloy systems.
