Effect of Phase Transition on the Optical Spectrum of Cu^<2+>:NH_4Br (Acidic) Crystals

Optical absorption spectrum of Cu" Tons doped in ammonium bromide(acidic)has been studied in the temperature range from 300 K to 173 K. From the observedspectrum, it is concluded that Cu" is incorporated interstitially. An abruptt>tue strict or about too cm-' is ot>servea at 232 K at the position or the t>anamaximum assigned to the transition "Aj.+"E. and this is attributed to theordering of coordinated water molecules. It is suggested that the divalent copperton has a fourfold bromine coordination associated with two neutral watermolecules at the first neighbor NHj sites along [0014 direction.
