Magnetoelectric Effect and Spin Direction in a Spin Flopped Cr_2O_3 Single Crystal

Magnetoelectric susceptibilitics a.. and a.. of an antiferromagnetic Cr.03single crystal have been measured in a pulsed magnetic field up to about 100 k0e.Here the I-, 2- and 3-axes are along the binary axis, in the glide plane and alongthe trigonal axis, respectively. Both x.. and ct.3 have a finite value after a spinflop transition in the range from liquid helium temperature to room temperature.This result leads to the conclusion that the magnetic point symmetry of spinflopped Cr.0. is 2/tn' or l'. The compatible spin directicn in the basal plane musthave a component normal to the binary axis.
