rhe second-order effect of the ctuadrur>ole interaction on the shar>e of thecentral line in strained crystals has been investigated on the basis of an analysisof the exrerimental sr>in-echo share. With the Gaussian distribution for randomtueld gradients, the followinu results were obtained: (i) Line shares are similarto the one in the absence of field nradient. When the ctuadrur>ole interaction isincreased from zero, the line shape is broadened to be observable, and tendsto a definite limit rather than to the one with infinite half-width. From the ex-perimental condition, the perturbation treatment is seen to be valid for lineshapes near the limit. (it) The line shape becomes asymmetric. (iii) The resonance-line shift due to the quadrupole interaction is negligibly small in comparisonwith the observed one. (iv) The asymmetry in field gradients may be neglectedfor the line shape.
