Liquid Instability and Freezing.II.Multi-Mode One Dimensional Analysis of a Nonlinear Diffusion Equation

In connection with freezing, dynamical beh?tviour of (metastable) liquids isstudied based on the nonlinear diffusion equation (ND eq.) derived in a previouspaper. From the ND eq., an #-theorem for the free-energy functional .F (Nor, t))of Brout is derived in the form d/ (Nor, t))/di $0. This SIIOWS that the ND eq.gives a dynamic extention of the mean field equation of freezing studied byKirkwood-Monroe, Brout and others. While two-mode aztalysis of the ND eq.essentially reproduces the previous results obtairted with a reductive perturbationmethod, V-mode analysis (7V>2) shows that a crystalline state bifurcates froma uniform one before the system reaches at the metastability limit. Thermodynamicarguments follow the bifurcation analysis to determine 8- transition (freezing)point.
