The ground-state properties of the low-density elcrctron system with the short-rangeelectron-phonon interaction is investigated theoretically in cox?nection with the selftrapping of an electron. The energy change of the system due Co lattice distortions iscalculated with the use of Fumi's theorem and the coherent potential approximation. It is shown that the itinerant electrons and the self-trapped elecxtrons coexist in a cerlain range of the parameters.self-trapping, small polaron, charge density wave, Peierls transition
