On the Electronic Structures of the M-Centers in Alkali-halide Crystals.

The electronic energy levels of the M-centers in the colored LiCl and NaCl crystals are calculated by LCAO method, assuming Seitz's model. The ground state and the first excited state (optically permitted) are shown to belong to A_1 and B_1 symmetry, respectively, the wave-lengths of the optical transition between them being in comparatively good agreement with the observed M-absorption peaks.
