Multilayered Nb/ Ti thin films were made by a dual dc- and rf-sputtering technique. The samples with modulation wavelength 2 ranging from 2000 A down to 20 A wereprepared. X-ray diffractometry shows that the as-deposited multilayer modulation issinusoidal in the shorter wavelength, while nearly square in the longer wavelength. Ir-respective of the wavelength 1, the Nb is bcc with stacking of (110) parallel to thesubstrate, and the This either the stacking of hcp(00.2) or bcc(] 10). The superconducting transition temperature T. is close to that for bulk Nb (9.3 K) in the region2>1000 A, while T. decreases to 4 K with decreasing 2 in the region 50<2<1000 A.Dependence of the transition temperature on the wavelength is in good agreementwith that observed by Qian et al. and is explained by the proximity effect according toWerthamer theory.
