Bloch's hydrodynamic approximation for treating the charge oscillation of anatom is arr>Iied to the Thomas-Fermi atom extended b'? introducins a modifiedWeizsicker correction. Normal mode solutions of the oscillation are obtainedand the atomic photoabsorption cross section and the Ioxarithmic mean excitationenersv are calculated. The differences of the results from those of the simpmeThomas-Fermi atom are as follows : (1 ) The eixenfreczuencies of the normal modesconsist of one discrete value ct:>o (<coc) and continuous values between co. and co,where 0)c IS l definxte frequency characterxstmc f0f BIT 1I1d1V1dLl3l atom. (2) Thephotoabsorption cross section has also a discrete value corresponding to thefrccnucnc't coo and continuous values for freczuencies larger than coc. (3) Thelogarithmic mean excitation energy becomes larger.
