A theory of' the antiferro-qtradrtrpolar (AFQ) ordering in TrruTe is presented on the basis of aclassical description of muJtipoles. The phase diagrazm of the AFQ state and its relatiotu to thetype of crystal field atad tlue forum of tntrltipolar interactions are sttrdied in detail. It is shoxvtathat the [3-AFQ order paranaeter in a crystal field with the (001)-eas3'-axis type is utaiqtrelycorasistertt xvitla the unagraetic-field araisotropy observed in TztaTe. A correlation is presertt betxveentlae spontaneotts and field-indttced antiferrornagnetic orders through the rnagnetic i?tteractioua inthe AFQ state; it leads to a nattrral interpretation of the pl'nase diagraraa of TraaTe. A largecotatribtrtion f'roraa octtrpoles on tlae AFQ transition ternperatttre is predicted in the laigl?-fieldregio?a due to the cooperative relation of octttpoles artd tlae naatgnetic field.
