We reported in the previous paper (Takahashi et al. 1991) that the deep placement of slow release N fertilizer (coated urea) contributed to a stable increase of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) yield. In the previous study we observed that the deep placement of coated urea did not depress appreciably the nitrogen fixation by root nodules although fertilizer N was efficiently utilized. We assumed that the N absorbed from the roots in the deep layers did not cause nodule senescence, contributed to the maintenance of the leaf activity during the maturation stage, and that the increase in the availability of carbohydrate and N improved seed production. In the current report the effects of placement of coated urea fertilizer on the root growth and activity were studied by measuring the root dry weight and Rb absorption activity. Tanaka (1997) reported a detailed study on the root distribution of leguminous crops in the field. Some reports were published on the effects of various fertilizer placements and soil moisture conditions on the root growth of soybean plants cultured in a root-box (Tanaka and Saito 1981 ; Kono et al. 1987). Tanaka and Saito (1981) reported that the roots grew thicker with moderate fertilizer application and that the number of feeder-roots increased in the area of fertilizer placement. However the number of field experiments conducted is limited. Although the ^32P or Eu tracer methods have been used to study the root activity, these methods are costly and require a special equipment for analysis. Recently Rb has been used as a convenient tracer. There are some reports on the measurement of the uptake of Rb in the field, for example in corn (Zea mays) (Hargrove 1985), paddy rice (Oryza sativa) (Kaneta et al. 1989), wheat (Triticum aestivum) (Mizuochi and Kawauchi 1988), and soybean (Glycine max) (Naganoma et al. 1991) in order to analyze the root activity for nutrient uptake. We employed the Rb tracer method to measure the moisture uptake activity and the root density.
