Quantum Electrodynamics in the General Covariant Gauge

A manifestly covariant quantization of the electromagnetic field in the general covariant gauge is presented by extending the method of the quantization in the Landau gauge. In the Feynman gauge, the method of the quantization in the Landau gauge. In the Feynman gauge, the theory presented here reduces to the Gupta-Bleuler formalism. The Hamiltonian of the system is explicitly constructed, and it is pointed out that its free part is formally identical with the one proposed by Utiyama in his classical, generalized canonical dynamics. The unitarity of the physical S-matrix is also discussed.
