A somewhat unconventional but unique model for predicting the binding energies of comparatively heavy p-shell hypernuclei is proposed under a close examination of the bindingenergy formula for ordinary nuclei. A model constructed in this way is understood by interpreting the bound hyperon as a member of the Fermi gas inside the hypernucleus. An extension of this model to the hyperon binding in a nucleus of infinite size can be perfomed by making use of appropriate step functions and of newly defined parameters. A new formula for determining the well depth for the hyperon is derived by an examination of the physical meaning of the good fit obtained for the p-shell hypernuclei and of the extended formula. The well depth D is predicted to be 32±0.2 MeV as an extrapolation from the p-shell hypernuclear data. The physical basis of the formula utilized in this fit is thoroughly discussed. The results obtained from our approach are compared with those in previous work of other authors.
