A New Approach to Hard Sphere System in Equilibrium. I : General Consideration

The purpose of the present paper is to study hard sphere system in any dimension by introducing new physical quantities named "vacancy-volume" and "overlap-volume". On the basis of general relations between canonical averages of these quantities and the configuration partition function, thermodynamical stability of the system is investigated. A method to develop the quantitative investigation on the thermodynamical properties of the system by the use of those quantities is discussed and its examples are studied. The present paper also serves for the basis of the investigation in a series of subsequent papers.
