Research by Chihara, Sakurai, and Oller (1989) has shown that changing culturally unfamiliar elements in a passage to conform more to the expectations of EFL readers results in a significantly better reading comprehension. To enhance the generalizability of their findings, the present study replicated their study from the viewpoints of proficiency and equivalence of cloze tests used as a measure of reading comprehension. Participants in this study were 128 EFL Japanese college students majoring in a non-English subject. The results did not parallel those of the original researchers. This leads the present researcher to suggest the following two points. First, not all EFL readers benefit from text modification in a passage. Second, equivalence is not maintained between the cloze tests in Chihara et al. (1989) and the tests in the present study, suggesting that sensitivity of deletions may vary from one cloze test to another even if cloze tests are made from the same passage.
