The purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of the conclusion drawn by Beebe and Takahashi (1989) that Japanese learners of English are not as polite as they are reputed to be when performing face-threatening acts (FTAs). The paper first reviews Beebe and Takahashi's research at some length. Then the author's expanded replication of their study is examined. The replication was carried out, using a discourse completion task, with three variables -age, language used, and proficiency -being controlled. The participants consisted of three Japanese female groups : 42 EFL students, 78 students with a non-English major (NEM), and 34 middle-aged women. The results show that the extent of how successful the EFL students' performance is depends on FTA situations. The paper concludes by stating that Beebe and Takahashi's conclusion is partially sustainable.
