Preference tests of the adult cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne FABRICIUS, for various host foods and extract from cured tobacco leaves were carried out under laboratory conditions. Results obtained were as follows : (1) The females were strongly attracted to cured tobacco leaves but the males were not. (2) Among the 11 items of host food other than cured tobacco leaves, toasted coffee meal was most attractive and among the 9 varieties of coffee assayed, var. Brazil was the most attractive. (3) The toasted coffee bean meals (var. Brazil) were less attractive than cured tobacco leaves (var. Samsun U). (4) The lower tobacco leaves were more attractive than the upper ones, and the rapidly dried leaves were far less active than the usually flue-cured ones. Turkish tobacco (Samsun U) was more attractive than any of the burley, domestics or flue-cured tobaccos. (5) All the active substances in cured tobacco leaves were extractable with dichloromethane and steam-distillable.
